Helpful Tips

Call your credit card company before departing to Mexico and advise them you'll be using your credit card in Cancun.

Write down customer service numbers for credit cards, bank cards, etc and leave them outside your wallet.  If your wallet gets stolen you'll be able to call them as soon as possible.

For Updated Travel Information, the U.S. Government Website mentions you should check their updates up until time of travel.  Passport laws have changed somewhat for re-entry to the U.S.  Mexico currently abides by the U.S. laws, but they could change their entry requirements with minimal notice.  See the following links –especially for those of you who have applied for a passport and have not received it.  Also check on documentation required for children traveling – especially those with only one parent with them.  You may need additional paperwork.

To access updated entry requirements for all countries, see  Consular Information Sheets ,Since the US can not establish Mexico's entry requirements.

******American citizens traveling are encouraged to register with the appropriate U.S. Embassy or Consulate on the State Department's travel registration website at https://travelregistration.state.gov

For any emergencies involving U.S. citizens in Mexico, it says "please contact the closest U.S. Embassy or Consulate." The U.S. Embassy is located in Mexico City at Paseo de la Reforma 305, Colonia Cuauhtemoc, telephone from the United States: 011-52-55-5080-2000; telephone within Mexico City: 5080-2000; telephone long distance within Mexico 01-55-5080-2000.  You may also contact the Embassy by e-mail at: ccs@usembassy.net.mx.  The Embassy's Internet address is http://www.usembassy-mexico.gov/.

Passport Info

U.S. citizens traveling to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or countries in the Caribbean region who have applied for, but not yet received passports, can re-enter the United States by air by presentation of a government issued photo identification and Department of State official proof of application for a passport through September 30, 2007.  The federal government is making this accommodation for air travel due to longer than expected processing times for passport applications in the face of record-breaking demand.

Adults who have applied for but not yet received a passport should present government-issued photo identification and an official proof of application from the U.S. Department of State. Children under the age of 16 traveling with their parents or legal guardian will be permitted to travel with the child’s proof of application status. This accommodation applies to all American citizens who apply for passports, until September 30, when this accommodation period ends. U.S. citizens with pending passport applications can obtain proof of application at: http://travel.state.gov/passport/get/status/status_2567.html.

Don’t forget to bring Band-aids to cover your rings… Barracudas like sparkly things!  And maybe waterproof/tight bags for your cameras, etc… I found  http://www.thewaterproofstore.com/ has quick turn around time and offers lots of waterproof bags to protect your equipment and "stuff" in general, camera  cases you can film and take pictures through, etc… different sizes too..  If you order from them, you may want to call rather than order online since we’re so close to travel time.  Don't forget film or batteries, or underwater cameras too.. they are probably way over-priced on-site.

You may want to pre-purchase an international phone-card off of Ebay or elsewhere to avoid the high International rates to call home.  Sean had a few phone calls to Mexico totalling $40, and no telling what phone calls from the hotel will be like, so a phone-card may be worth it.  Just make sure it works for calls FROM Mexico.
